Presentation Details

This interactive session will explore how Climate ("How things get done around here") influences Culture ("How people are expected to get things done around here") and how both impact Outcomes (behavior, performance, and effectiveness).

We will identify:

  • A positive climate which leads to a Constructive Culture resulting in productive behaviors, high performance, and long-term effectiveness.

  • A mixed climate which leads to an Aggressive/Defensive Culture resulting in counterproductive behaviors, mixed performance, and short-term effectiveness along only some criteria.

  • A negative climate which leads to a Passive/Defensive Culture resulting in counterproductive behaviors, poor or little performance, and long-term ineffectiveness.

Understanding how climate and culture work together is crucial because they reflect and shape how an organization functions. Climate reflects the daily experience, while culture sets and encompasses the deeper expectations for behavior.

Constructive cultural values can lead to a positive climate which, in turn, leads to a constructive operating culture, driving productivity and innovation. When Constructive values fail to shape systems and structures, a negative climate emerges and fosters Defensive, unproductive behaviors.

By focusing on and improving both climate and culture, leaders can create an environment in which people thrive, leading to sustainable success and long-term adaptability and performance. Ultimately, a positive climate and constructive operating culture provide the foundation for high performance and growth.

During this session, you'll:

  1. Assess Your Organization's Climate: Use the tools from this session to actively evaluate your workplace—whether it's open and collaborative or closed and uncooperative—and understand how it impacts daily operations.

  2. Identify Culture Norms: Recognize which behaviors are being encouraged or discouraged by your organization’s culture. Are they driving positive outcomes, or are they holding your team back?

  3. Take Immediate Action: Apply the insights to make small but impactful changes—like fostering open communication or encouraging constructive feedback—that can shift your culture toward long-term success.
